Dr. Hood is a world-renowned scientist and recipient of the National Medal of Science. He co-founded the Institute for Systems Biology and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine, one of only 20 people worldwide elected to all three. As a faculty member and chair of biology at Caltech, he contributed to develop instruments that paved the way for the Human Genome Project. Dr. Hood has co-founded 20 biotech companies, received many national and international awards, co-authored two books, five textbooks and published more than 1,000 peer-reviewed papers.
